Living memory: new Great Council Interpretive Center honors the history of Shawnee Tribes

Blending History with Modern Interpretation

Once home to the largest-known Shawnee settlements in Ohio, the new Interpretive and Welcome Center at Great Council State Park serves as both a museum and experiential educational hub, telling the story of the tribes that inhabited Old Chillicothe.

With input from the Shawnee, Eastern Shawnee, and Absentee Shawnee tribes and their leaders, and with strong support from Governor Mike DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine, the project marks a significant milestone in Ohio’s history.

EDGE worked closely with ODNR staff and the design team to provide overall design direction for the site, and ensures that the center harmoniously integrates into the surrounding landscape. Unique features such as fallen leaves impressed into the concrete, an emphasis on sustainable native plantings, and historical markers and educational signage, blend historical and modern design elements aimed at honoring the site’s cultural heritage.
