Creating flexible space: master plan generates new opportunities for Toledo hillside park
Park improvements that protect the environment
Nestled within a residential neighborhood southwest of Toledo, the Brookwood Area Metropark sits on top of a 45-acre hillside overlooking Swan Creek Preserve.
EDGE developed a master plan for the area immediately surrounding the event facility that can be used for Metroparks programs, small events, and flexible space for private functions.
The initial phase of improvements focused on enhancing circulation through the site, including a new entrance drive and accessible drop-off loop, a pedestrian entry plaza, and parking for 30 cars. The restoration of 1.9 acres of lawn to natural meadow and the creation of a bio-retention system for water runoff were established to blend into the adjacent Preserve and improve the water quality of Swan Creek.
Future phases of the master plan will provide sensitively integrated amenities that engage with the site’s natural features. Recommendations include a hillside path from the house down to Swan Creek, a kayak launch, an elevated tree-top trail, and tree house overlooking the creek.
