Health plan: welcoming design showcases world-class student recreation center

Creating a gateway design for the hub of student wellness

Serving as a gateway into the heart of campus, the Penn State Intramural Building is positioned as the hub for all student recreation activities on campus. Over the course of three consecutive phases, the building and site were transformed from an internally-focused “bunker” into a transparent showcase of health and wellness. The new building is now recognized as one of the best recreational facilities in the country.

Landscape features included in EDGE’s design extend the architectural form of the Intramural Building into the surrounding site while providing expressions of movement, sustainability, and internal function. In addition to improving pedestrian circulation and accessibility to the facility, our design created an energized and welcoming entry experience for this prominent campus facility.
