The I-40 Corridor/Jefferson Street Beautification project was the pilot project for the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Roadscapes program. The program aims to create well-planned landscape beautification that boosts the area’s economy and improves the quality of life for its citizens. EDGE led the Jefferson Street community through a public process that resulted in a design solution which responded to the surrounding neighborhood and created the framework for restoring pride to the historic Jefferson Street District. Heritage Plaza is the centerpiece of the enhancement. The public plaza celebrates African Americans that have influenced Nashville and the rest of the United States in the areas of civil rights, education, music, religion, and athletics. Custom interpretive signs wrap freeway columns within a plaza of weaving pavement patterns. The interpretive stories continue along Jefferson Street with solar powered sign columns. .
