Fontanel Mansion / The Woods Amphitheater

This adaptive re-use in a rural setting has become one of Nashville’s best tourist destinations.

EDGE was the lead design consultant for this unique 136 acre property. Working with our client’s program and the community’s input, we were able to transform one of the largest log structures in the country from a private residence into a Music City tourist destination while preserving nearly 95% of the property as open space. Additions to the mansion grounds included a restaurant, an indoor performance hall, and a Southern Living Idea House. EDGE guided the vision for the architectural character and site layout to recreate a southern farmstead along the historic Whites Creek Pike corridor. A large portion of the site is located within the floodway, and was previously deemed undevelopable. Creative site planning combined with appropriate land uses such as an outdoor amphitheater, multi-use/passive play fields, Frisbee golf areas, and hiking trails led to an ecologically sensitive design approach to the overall site while creating new economic opportunities for the community.
